CHAPTER 11

Martha joined them in Lauren’s cottage, accepting a cup of hot chocolate.

“Need to keep my energy levels up, now I’m an actress.” She winked.

Lauren crunched a bowl of granola while Zoe opted for whole wheat toast slathered with butter. Annie enjoyed chicken in gravy – a second breakfast for her.

“So is Trish your agent now?” Lauren asked her cousin after her last bite.

“I don’t know, but she did call me this morning to tell me about the filming.”

“I wonder how she knew about it?”

“Where’s Burt?” Martha asked. “Why didn’t he tell you?”

The three of them looked at each other. After finishing her snack, Annie had hopped onto the chair next to Lauren’s.

“Burt’s dead,” Zoe replied.

“We found him on Saturday,” Lauren added.

“Who did it?” Martha stared at them, her eyes wide. Another thought struck her. “But what about my scripts? The princess one and the retired lady detective? He was interested in them!”

“Maybe Trish will take a look at them when you’ve finished them,” Zoe said. “And we don’t know who did it – yet.”

“You know what this means.” Martha slurped the rest of her hot chocolate. “We’ve got to investigate.”

Lauren groaned inwardly.

“Yes!” Zoe’s face lit up.

“Brrt!”

“Aren’t we busy enough with the movie crew?” Lauren asked. “I also need to come up with a new cupcake idea. Mitch is in charge of the investigation, and I’m sure he’ll catch whoever did this.”

“But what if he can’t?” Martha demanded. “There are a lot of movie people in this town right now. What if he doesn’t have time to go around interviewing them all?”

“He’s already questioned them,” Lauren replied. “I’m sure he’ll catch the killer.” She didn’t doubt her husband’s abilities, but sometimes the investigations took longer than Zoe, Annie, and now Martha, would like. Out of the four of them, she was the only reluctant sleuth.

“If he can’t, we can!” Martha’s curly gray hair sprung around her face.

“Won’t you be busy acting in the movie?” Lauren pointed out.

“After that. I love the part you wrote for me—” Martha turned to Zoe “—but there aren’t that many lines altogether. So I bet I can breeze through my role and then we can start investigating.”

“Shouldn’t you practice your lines first?” Lauren asked faintly.

“That’s what Joan said.” Martha nodded.

“When are you filming?” Zoe wanted to know.

“Not today. Maybe tomorrow. They weren’t exactly sure. Sometime this week. They said they’ll contact me and to be ready when they called.”

“I hope you won’t be in the middle of something important when that happens,” Lauren said.

“I’ve got nothing on this week, anyway.” Martha flapped a hand. “Apart from visiting you girls in the café, and the senior center.” She chuckled. “Wouldn’t it be a hoot if they call me during water color class and I announce to everyone I’ve gotta go because I’m filming in twenty minutes?”

“That would be funny.” Zoe giggled.

Lauren smiled, just imagining Martha saying that. “Oh, that reminds me.” She turned to Zoe. “We were going to visit Mrs. Finch today.”

“That’s right!” Zoe tapped her forehead.
